Biographical Notes

Dr Stanley Vollant is an Innu from Pessamit. He earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Université de Montréal in 1989, which he completed in 1994 with a specialization in general surgery. He became the first Indigenous surgeon in Quebec. His notable contributions include his presidency for the Quebec Medical Association, mandate during which he represented the 9,000 doctors in the province, and his seat on the Executive Council of the Canadian Medical Association. Dr. Vollant is currently travelling along the trails of his ancestors, Innu Meshkenu, to meet with First Nations communities and neighbouring communities to, among other things, inspire and educate youth on the importance of education and the acquisition of healthy lifestyles, and collect Elders’ knowledge to contribute to the preservation and transmission of this heritage. He began his walk totalling nearly 6000 kilometres in the fall of 2010 and expects to complete his journey in 2017. In pursuing his goals, Dr. Vollant founded the Chemin des mille rêves in 2016, whose mission is to inspire and support the First Peoples to forge their own path of a thousand dreams by developing their full mental, spiritual, physical and emotional potential.
